Coating Application: Raft Repair Knowledge Base

How To Apply Our Urethane Coating

Work outside in the shade or a well ventilated area. Wear eye protection, chemical resistant gloves and use a fresh air respirator if one is available. If one is not available, use a fan to provide a fresh air flow to and from your work area. Clean your inflatable with toluol ( for hypalon boats) or MEK (for PVC boats) .
  1. Buff or abrade the surface of the material to create a micro texture for the Urethane to adhere to. This product will not stick to a surface that is slick and/or shinny. We sell abrasive wheels that you can put in a variable speed drill or you can use sandpaper and buff by hand.

  2. Blow or wipe the dust away. If you want a clean straight edge, apply 2" masking tape or painters tape. Also, be sure to slightly cover the edge of the abraded area with the tape to prevent the Urethane from getting onto un-abraded material where it can start to peel up.

  3. If primer is supplied with your kit (not all kits need primer), apply it with a disposable brush or short nap roller. Allow the primer to dry to the stickiness of duct tape and then apply the urethane.

Our Urethane is a 1:1 mixing ratio between Part A and Part B. If you have purchased pigment, add it to the mix immediately after mixing A and B. You can mix different pigment colors to achieve almost any custom color.
  1. Apply the Urethane with a disposable brush or short nap roller.

  2. Remove the masking tape BEFORE the Urethane sets up completely and allow to cure overnight.

  3. You can use sawhorses and/or buckets to prop the boat up in a position that will help you deal with the affects of gravity.

We have also had pretty good success sealing pin hole leaks by apply to the chamber while the chamber is deflated. When doing pin holes, do not inflate the boat until the next day. Best results will be obtained if you do not roll the boat up for a week or so after the Urethane dries.
